Please proceed at your own risk. Cars by name Trucks and Jeeps. Most of us think of the tailpipe when auto emissions are mentioned, but toxic emissions come from other parts of the car, too. The open fuel systems used through the late s freely vented gasoline vapors, which reacted with sunlight to form toxic smog.

The fuel system had two external vents: one at the fuel tank sometimes through the capand one at the carburetor float bowl. Starting with the model year except in California, which started incars had to contain gasoline vapors, which meant redesigned tanks, filler necks, gas caps, fuel lines, and carburetors.

The ECS used a complicated fuel tank, which had a small inner tank at the top connected to the main tank chamber by a very small passageway to prevent overfilling. When gasoline was pumped in, the main tank chamber filled up; the secondary chamber was still mostly empty. After the driver hung up the nozzle and drove off, fuel flowed into the secondary tank from the main chamber, dropping the fuel level in the main chamber and preventing fuel being forced out of the tank when things warmed up and expanded.

This also helped to prevent fuel stains from fuel sloshing out of the tank. These ECS fuel tanks had four vent fittings, one at each corner of the top of the tank, brought together in the trunk to a more-or-less vertical metal cylinder leaning against the left wheelhouse.

Inside the separator, each of the four fittings from the corners of the tank continued vertically, each to a different height. The fitting to the engine bay continued inside the separator, almost to the top. The idea with the four-corner venting and the different-height pipes inside the separator was that no matter what angle the car was at, in what direction, there would always be at least one vent fitting above the liquid-fuel level, so there would always be a vapor vent, thus preventing pressure buildup that would force fuel vapors out.

The lines to the four tank-corner vents were relatively short inside the separator, so any liquid fuel that got into the separator or condensed in it could eventually flow back to the tank.

The line to the engine bay extended the highest inside the separator so that only vapor, not liquid fuel, would enter that line. The ECS was unique; it used the engine crankcase to store fuel vapors, both from the cylinder in the trunk, and from the carburetor bowl.

The carburetor bowl vent was routed via another nipple on the breather cap on V8 engines, or via a nipple on the fuel pump body on Slant Six engines.

When the engine was stopped, fuel vapors traveled into the crankcase and remained there until the engine was started. The collected vapors were then drawn off out of the crankcase and into the intake tract via the PCV valve. Thus, most of the unburned hydrocarbons wound up out in the atmosphere anyhow, only they were first put through the engine and then emitted from the tailpipe as black smoke!

Forthe ECS was redesigned so well that systems of nearly the same design are still used. These tanks had only one vent fitting instead of the previous four, and the trunk cylinder was no longer needed; the single tank vent ran directly to the engine bay. Up front, rather than using the crankcase to store fuel vapors, the company added a black plastic tank filled with activated charcoal.

It was placed at the front corner of the engine bay, with lines to the carb bowl and fuel tank vent; it had a purge valve mounted on top, with a small-diameter vacuum line teed into the distributor vacuum advance line, and a large-diameter line from the underside of the purge valve teed into the PCV valve hose.

When the purge valve opened, air was drawn through the bed of charcoal granules, which released and diluted the stored fuel vapor. Pre pre California cars all had an open fuel tank vent, a steel line running from the top of the tank, up high into the corner of the trunk so liquid fuel wouldn't escape unless you overfilled the tank and then the day heated upthen making a sharp U-turn and going all the way back down, through the trunk floor, and open to the atmosphere.

That had to stop when these evaporative emission control systems came in.

One of those check valves had very low tension, to easily allow air to flow into the tank, so there would be no vacuum as fuel was used. The high-tension check valve was there for safety, in case vapor volume was much higher than usual and could not be vented through the charcoal can and purge lines. Under some circumstances, such as rapidly driving up a mountain on a hot day with a tank of especially volatile gasoline, the vapor volume could be higher than normal, and the cap would bleed off excess pressure.

The two-nipple Slant Six or three-nipple V8 breather caps are hard to find, and therefore expensive. A standard up Mopar breather can be adapted by drilling holes and adding brass or nylon hose nipples, but a much better option is to upgrade to the type system with charcoal can and purge valve.

The canister must be kept upright, with the ports at the top. Canisters for older GM and Ford vehicles are easy to find, but not those for carbureted Mopars. The key to retain Toyota Land Cruiser's resale and trade-in value is through excellent maintenance. While you can consider this SUV less demanding when it comes to regular maintenance, it always pays to have reliable replacement Toyota Land Cruiser parts on hand.

These parts will save you in case of serious exhaust, suspension, engine or transmission problems. You can also improve its power and restore its like-new appearance using only quality and well-engineered Toyota parts.

Consult your owner's manual if you want to find out more about your SUV's needs. Also find out compatible components you can use when fixing, maintaining, and upgrading your Land Cruiser. Renowned for its toughness and durability, the Toyota Land Cruiser has been a popular vehicle since its introduction in Though Toyota used a Jeep on which it based its design for the Land Cruiser, the models driven today are a far cry from those original utilitarian vehicles.

Since its inception, the Toyota Land Cruiser has consistently been changing to reflect the latest in technology, handling, and performance. Those changes have made the Land Cruiser the popular vehicle it is today for both those who want a rugged off-road option and for those who want a roomy SUV. Though the Toyota Land Cruiser has been made sinceit wasn't until the late s that Toyota began to shift its focus from a military-type vehicle to one for civilians who demanded comfort.

The J55 was considered the first station wagon Toyota made, but it still retained the higher body and ruggedness of a Land Cruiser. This model, which lasted untillaunched the production of other station wagons in Toyota's line. During the s, car buyers could choose from the Toyota Land Cruiser 60 line. These versions were equipped with more comfort features than previous models. Air conditioning and a more comfortable interior were now standard in the Land Cruiser.

Strangely enough, the s was when Toyota produced the 80 series of Land Cruiser. In this line, Toyota integrated both passenger and driver air bags and changed the logo on the front to the Toyota symbol instead of just the name. This new emblem became a piece in the catalog of Toyota Land Cruiser parts as well as those of later years. From throughthe series made several technological advancements for the Land Cruiser.

Among the innovations were a night view camera to improve driving after dark, an independent front suspension system to make handling easier, and a V-8 engine under the hood to enhance performance. The most recent Land Cruisers are in the series and include the most up-to-date features for safety, security, and performance: up to 10 airbags, push-button start, multi-terrain select, and much more.

News and World Report has ranked the Land Cruiser as high as 4 on their list of luxury SUVs, but even with its long and trusted history, the Toyota Land Cruiser has not been without problems.

Considering its year history, there have been relatively few problems with the Toyota Land Cruiser. Some model years have been recalled for an unexpected side air bag deployment. Other years have had cargo capacities mislabeled, which could lead to the vehicle being too heavily loaded for its tires to handle. More recent series Land Cruisers may have experienced an acceleration pedal that could potentially become stuck open. All of these recalls and any others are issues that should be addressed as soon as possible.

The directional valve is in place to prevent a backfire from spreading to the crankcase. In the event of a backfire into the intake manifold, the PCV is supposed to seal shut, preventing the flame front from traveling into the crankcase. Without this directional valve in place and fully functional a backfire could also cause a crankcase explosion.

All motors will experience some degree of Blowby.

OE PCV hose variations

Blowby is not the only source of crankcase pressure however. Due to the reciprocation of the pistons there will be a build up of pressure due to the air not being able to flow as fast as the pistons are moving in the higher RPMs Blowby of combustion gasses introduces fuel and other combustion by products into the crankcase.

Raw fuel, moisture, and various acidic materials will all contaminate the engine oil. Moisture can also enter the crankcase due to condensation overnight. The good news is that most of these contaminants are highly volatile, meaning they will vaporize at relatively low temps; around F. Once these contaminants and moisture have volatized though, they must be purged from the crankcase. This is where a crankcase ventilation system comes in. In the old days the crankcase was vented to the atmosphere via a hose that ran under the car or into the exhaust.

The downside to this is that these volatile materials were being introduced to the atmosphere, increasing environmental damage. Now a Positive Crankcase Ventilation system is in use.

In a positive venting system the crankcase contaminants are purged into the intake manifold so that they can be burned in the normal combustion process.

This is very effective at reducing the amount of unburned HCs that are released to the atmosphere. If it is wet with oil then this is an entry point. The normal causes of this are excess Blowby which needs to be ruled out with a compression testor the VC baffle has been removed for rocker clearance.

Just looking down the oil filler neck should reveal if the baffle is in place. If you see rockers, then it is time to get creative and fabricate a baffle. Next pull the PCV hose.

Again if it is wet with oil, this is an entry route. A quick fix for this is a separator from Steeda, Home Depot, or Lowes.Forums New posts Search forums. Media New media New comments Search media. Joined Apr 14, Messages 27, Location I have several places in my shop that are the dismantler's equivalent of the fast-food grease pit: I toss 'like ' things into the pile with the intention of sorting through it 'someday.

So this one pit has about a hundred hoses I've harvested off of rigs I've parted out over the last three decades. Without further adeu, here is my attempt at an arcane list of factory hoses. Note: I have thrown all the bad hoses away. All these hoses are useable and available for purchase First up, the F PCV hoses. These were cloth wrapped, just like the early fan belts.

Last edited: Dec 2, Next up were the f variety. It's a little hard to tell from the pic, but these hoses are brick red. The ' PCV hose looked basically the same as the iteration.

The later F valve covers used a fatter breather hose to return fresh air to the crankcase. These hoses look a lot like the style, but with a shallower bend.Saved - View your saved items. We're sorry. Didnt fit my 04 GT. Exact fit didn't need to do anything but simply remove old one and install new one that simple highly recommended. OEM replacement. Thank you for the quick shipping. I received a cease and desist letter from the US Space Force, I cannot talk about this classified item or its origins. But it ain't from this planet. Hard plastic section shaped slightly differently than my stock PCV. Still got it to work with some finagling.

As quick as you can pull tubes this is replaced. Looking good and pulling pcv like a beast. Cleared up a small vac leak too. Worth every penny.

Work well as described. Good price and had everything that was in picture as described. No problem installing took about 2 min. Is this for the passenger or driver's side PCV?

I'm looking for the pcv hose from the driver side valve cover to the cold air intake.
